Harald Zapp, founder and CEO of Next Big Thing AG

In the current issue of our customer magazine Harald Zapp explains how the chip crisis can turn into an opportunity for Europe. He is the founder and CEO of Next Big Thing AG, which has specialised in establishing Deep Tech companies. “In the long term we have to develop our own production capacity in Europe in order to reduce dependencies,” says Zapp in the interview for our customer magazine Panorama.

But genuine innovation is important as well as security of supply: “We have to ask ourselves what the future usage scenarios for chips look like. This is where the greatest proportion of added value comes from.” It extends from the Internet of Things through autonomous mobility to smart buildings and smart cities.

Zapp urges Europe to be guided by the example of Silicon Valley in the 1970’s, by MIT and Harvard. This is where the crème de la crème gathered. The high innovation rate brought in the investors. “Silicon Saxony is Europe’s largest microelectronics centre and the fifth largest in the world. This is where we should develop what has already been achieved,” explained Zapp.
